This folder contains Frank Kunze's very excellent "Eamon Deluxe" system, a quite amazing conversion of the basic Apple II Eamon system to MS-DOS. It does a very good job of retaining the flavor of the original Apple Eamon while adding many very nice enhancements. I think you will enjoy playing with it.

This system can be installed directly from this CD. Simply double click the INSTALL.EXE file in the EAMONDX directory. It will create an EAMONDX folder on your hard drive and will put the system there. You must select each of the menued items for a full install. Everything will unpack to the newly-created EAMONDX folder. As these are new files rather than copies, they will not have a read-only status.

It can also be transferred to floppy disks for those of you who don't have a CD burner or Zip Drive and want to give copies out. The folders DISK1, DISK2, DISK3, etc. contain files that you can copy to your floppy drive. Do not transfer the folders themselves, but just the files within them. After you have made your floppies, double-click on the program INSTALL.EXE on the floppy.

To start Eamon Deluxe, run the program EAMONDX.BAT in the EAMONDX folder.

This version of Eamon Deluxe contains many improvements over the previous versions released on the Eamon CD and appears to be very stable, even on new machines and operating systems. If you already have Eamon Deluxe on your PC and want to install the updated version, simply delete (or rename) the entire EAMONDX directory and start over.

Here are some tips:

SPEED SETTING - VERY IMPORTANT!
If you are using a newer version of Windows (like ME and XP) and a fast proccessor it probably won't auto-set the speed right. This is very important for game timing and special effects and a temporary fix has been included: From the Main Eamon Deluxe Menu press the plus (+) key to speed it up and the minus (-) key to slow it down. Keep doing this until the text at the top and bottom scrolls by at a moderate pace.

BROWSING ADVENTURES - ALSO IMPORTANT
Most Eamon Deluxe "Adventures" are sets of 20 or more "classic" adventures. The fastest way to browse the contents of these collections is (from the Main Menu): Select "VIEW/PRINT MANUALS", the select "Adventure Lists". If you want to actually try out these sets but don't want to make up a new character for each one (you must die or find an exit to leave an EDX set) select (again from the Main Menu): Dungeon Designer Menu, Test a Design, pick a test character, and then adventure from there. Test characters can go on as many adventures at once as you want, "real" characters cannot.

MOVING AROUND THE GRAPHIC MAIN HALL
If the arrow keys won't move you around the Graphic Main Hall, try pushing your NumLock key and/or using your numeric keypad.

COMPUTER FREEZE UP
If it ever hangs and leaves you in never-never land, pressing Alt-Esc should drop it back to a window on your desktop. Or try Control-Alt-Delete.

DOCUMENTATION
If for some reason the manuals and adventure lists won't print, they are stored in the directory EAMONDX\MANUALS in plain text format. There is also a Microsoft Works database file of the adventure lists in that directory.

UPDATING EAMON DELUXE TO THE LASTEST VERSION WHILE SAVING OLD CHARACTERS
To install the newest version of Eamon Deluxe over a previous one while keeping your old characters follow these easy steps: 1. Make sure none of your characters are on an adventure -- If they are use the Character Editor to bring them back. 2. Rename the EAMONDX directory to something else (like EDX or EAMONDX1). 3. Install the new version of Eamon Deluxe. 4. Copy the files NUMPLRS.DAT and PLAYERS.DAT from [your renamed directory]\MAIN over the same files in the EAMONDX\MAIN directory. It's as easy as that!
